Severe Heatwave Expected in Delhi from April 24: Yellow Alert Issued

Delhi is gearing up for a severe heatwave as temperatures are forecasted to soar between 41°C and 43°C from April 24 to April 26, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the national capital, signaling a moderate risk and urging residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of intense heat.

After a slight dip in temperatures on April 22, when the mercury settled at 39.9°C, the heat is expected to intensify again starting April 23, with maximum temperatures hovering around 40-42°C. The heatwave is predicted to peak from April 24 to 26, with temperatures rising 2 to 4 degrees above normal across different parts of Delhi.

The IMD has highlighted that vulnerable groups such as infants, elderly individuals, and people with chronic illnesses are at moderate health risk during this spell. To mitigate the effects of the heatwave, residents are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, wear light-colored, loose cotton clothing, and use hats or umbrellas when outdoors. Staying hydrated and limiting strenuous activities during peak heat hours are also strongly recommended.

This heatwave follows a similar spell earlier in April when Delhi experienced temperatures above 40°C from April 7 to 9. Alongside the rising temperatures, air quality in Delhi remains poor, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 227, which is expected to persist until at least April 25. The combination of high heat and poor air quality could exacerbate health issues, particularly respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. Awareness campaigns and advisories are being circulated to ensure public safety during this challenging weather phase.

As Delhi braces for this heatwave, it is essential for citizens to stay informed, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and take care of vulnerable community members.
